More is not however better for patient cancer

More is not however better!

Red wine – contains polyphenols (potent antioxidants) and resveratrol (inhibits cancer) But excessive alcohol is toxic to liver and is cancer causing
Soya – contains isoflavones which is good for prevention of cancer but it also contains phytoestrogens which in high doses may stimulate cancer growth

Common Cancer Myths…
“I cannot take sugar as it will feed the cancer cells”
Many foods are made up of complex sugars eg. Rice, bread, noodles – these are all carbohydrates which are eventually broken down to simple sugars like glucose in the gut.
Fruits also contain sugar called fructose.

“Meat is bad for patients with cancer”
Meat is an excellent source of good quality protein, vitamins and minerals.
Even small amounts of red meat are acceptable as they contain more iron which is vital to the human body.

“I must starve myself to starve the cancer”
Cancer cells are better at withstanding “starvation” than normal cells. Most patients which embark on this reduce their immunity further enabling the cancer to grow even faster.

“Cancer treatments cannot succeed if patients are not well nourished and are not taking a well balanced diet!”

So in conclusion, how can I maximize my chances of beating cancer?
* Eat a well balanced, nutritious diet – eg. if not keen to eat too much meat, supplement with protein drinks
* Eat small frequent meals
* Avoid excessive intake of fruits & veg – they are of less nutritional value and may exacerbate bloatedness
* Maintain an exercise program which suits your energy level
* Discuss openly with your doctor problems with treatment side effects, diet, sleep, bowel movements…..
* It is recommended to undergo between 30 to 60 minutes of moderate physical activity 3-4 times a week
* Studies have shown that physical activity can help protect against some cancers
* Cancer patients who are able to exercise moderately improve their well being and appetite
